DNS Academy Fellows Visit UIXP and .ug ccTLD to Learn About Uganda’s Internet Infrastructure
The DNS Academy fellows today conducted a practical learning visit to two critical components of Uganda’s Internet infrastructure the Uganda Internet Exchange Point (UIXP) and the .ug country code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) registry operated by Uganda Registry Services.
The visit was designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world operations, giving participants firsthand exposure to how the Internet functions beyond theory.
At the Uganda Internet Exchange Point (UIXP), fellows learned how Internet Service Providers (ISPs) interconnect to exchange local traffic efficiently. The technical team explained the role of IXPs in reducing latency, lowering bandwidth costs, and improving local content accessibility. Participants also gained insight into routing, peering arrangements, redundancy, and the importance of keeping local traffic local for a resilient national Internet ecosystem.
The second session was held at the .ug ccTLD registry, where fellows explored how domain names under Uganda’s national namespace are managed. The registry team walked participants through domain registration processes, DNS resolution, policy implementation, and the role of the registry in maintaining stability and trust in the national Internet space. Discussions also highlighted the relationship between technical operations and Internet governance policy.
Throughout the visit, fellows engaged in interactive discussions with engineers and registry experts, asking questions about operational challenges, security considerations, and the future of Internet infrastructure in Uganda.
